“AI metadata” is not one universal standard. Different image-generation and editing workflows can write very different information into a file. Some may add a software name or application-specific text. Some local workflows can store prompt-like parameters or processing information. Some services attach C2PA Content Credentials. Other files may contain no obvious generation metadata at all.
This tool should inspect what is actually present and remove supported conventional metadata only after showing the user the fields.
What People Mean by AI Image Metadata
Users often use the phrase “AI metadata” to describe several different things:
- software tags identifying an application;
- XMP fields or custom namespaces;
- PNG text chunks containing workflow information;
- prompts, seeds, model names, sampler settings, or node/workflow data written by particular tools;
- C2PA assertions or Content Credentials;
- invisible or robust watermarking systems such as SynthID.
These categories are technically different. A trustworthy cleaner should not combine them into one misleading “AI signature” label.
Prompt and Workflow Metadata
Some generation tools intentionally save reproducibility information inside image metadata. That can be useful for creators who want to revisit a workflow. It can also be unnecessary in a public derivative.
When the parser recognizes such fields, label them by the actual container and key, for example a PNG text keyword, XMP namespace, or software-specific value. If the tool does not recognize a field, show it as unknown metadata instead of guessing what it means.
C2PA Is Provenance, Not Ordinary EXIF
C2PA Content Credentials use signed claims and assertions to communicate provenance. The standard defines structures for statements about creation, editing, ingredients, and bindings to the asset.
If a user chooses an operation that removes or invalidates a C2PA manifest, display a warning. A provenance credential can be valuable to creators and publishers, and deleting it should not be presented as routine privacy hygiene.
SynthID Is Not a Metadata Field
Google describes SynthID as embedding an imperceptible watermark in supported AI-generated or AI-edited content. That is fundamentally different from an Exif tag, PNG text chunk, or XMP property that can simply be deleted from a metadata container.
The tool must therefore say plainly: ordinary metadata cleaning does not claim to remove SynthID or similar pixel-embedded watermarking systems.
What the Cleaner Can Honestly Do
The cleaner can inspect supported metadata containers, identify recognized software or workflow fields, remove selected conventional metadata, verify the new file, and explain whether C2PA data was detected.
It cannot prove that an image was or was not generated by AI. It cannot guarantee removal of every hidden watermark or fingerprint. It should not be marketed as a way to deceive provenance systems.
FAQ
Can an AI image have no metadata at all?
Yes. Export, conversion, screenshotting, platform processing, or the generation service itself may produce a file with little recognizable metadata. Absence of metadata does not prove human authorship.
Can a real camera photo contain software metadata?
Yes. Editing, resizing, exporting, or cataloging a genuine photograph can add software and XMP fields.
Will removing prompt metadata change the visible image?
If the prompt is stored only in a removable metadata field and the tool can rewrite that metadata without re-encoding pixels, the visible image can remain unchanged.
