Metadata Is Not Proof by Itself

Metadata can be created automatically, changed manually, removed by software, copied between files, left stale after editing, or lost during conversion and sharing. A metadata field should not be treated as definitive proof of who created an image, where it was captured, when it was captured, or whether it was generated or edited by AI.

Cleaning Is Not Anonymity

Removing embedded metadata does not hide information visible in the image and does not prevent websites, apps, networks, or recipients from collecting other information about a user or upload.

Provenance Systems Have Limits

C2PA Content Credentials can provide signed provenance information when supported credentials are present and validate correctly. Absence of a credential does not mean an image is false. Presence of a credential does not eliminate the need to interpret who signed it and what it actually asserts.

Invisible Watermarks Are Different

Ordinary EXIF, XMP, IPTC, text, or container metadata cleaning should not be understood as removal of imperceptible watermarks such as Google SynthID. These are technically different mechanisms.

Platform Behavior Changes

Social networks, messaging apps, browsers, operating systems, and cloud photo services can change how they handle image metadata. Any platform-specific guide represents researched behavior and documentation as of its stated update date, not a permanent guarantee.

File Compatibility

Complex, corrupted, proprietary, animated, multi-image, HDR, or unusually encoded files may not be fully supported. Keep the original file before processing.
