Open an image and inspect the information embedded inside the file. The metadata viewer organizes technical tags into understandable groups so you can see camera data, dates, GPS coordinates, descriptive fields, software information, and supported provenance data without having to interpret raw binary structures.
Inspect the File Before You Clean It
A viewer is useful for two reasons. First, it tells you whether a file actually contains sensitive metadata. Second, it gives you a way to verify a cleaned result rather than trusting a generic “metadata removed” message.
For privacy work, verification matters. Some formats can contain more than one metadata family. A JPEG may contain Exif plus XMP plus IPTC. A PNG may contain an eXIf chunk and textual chunks. A WebP file may carry Exif, XMP, and ICC chunks.
A good scan therefore checks the file structure for all supported metadata containers instead of stopping after the first EXIF block.
Metadata Categories You May See
Camera and capture: make, model, lens, exposure, aperture, ISO, focal length, orientation, and capture time.
Location: latitude, longitude, altitude, GPS direction, and other geotag fields.
Descriptive: title, description, caption, headline, subject, keywords, and rating.
Creator and rights: creator name, credit, copyright notice, rights usage information, and licensing-related fields.
Software and workflow: editing application, export software, processing history, XMP namespaces, or application-specific parameters.
Color information: ICC profiles and color-space data. These are usually not personal metadata and may be important for accurate color display.
Provenance: C2PA Content Credentials or related manifest information when present and supported by the checker.
How to Read the Results
Do not judge a field only by its technical tag name. The UI should show the raw name, human-readable meaning, and privacy relevance.
For example, GPSLatitude and GPSLongitude can be combined into a point on a map. DateTimeOriginal generally describes capture time. Make and Model can identify the camera or phone family. Artist or IPTC creator fields can identify the rights holder or author. A software field can reveal which application exported the image.
Some fields are ambiguous. A date may have been changed by editing software. A location may have been added later. Metadata should be treated as information carried by the file, not unquestionable proof of what happened in the physical world.
Why “No EXIF” Does Not Prove Origin
A real camera photo can lose metadata after an export, screenshot, social upload, conversion, optimization pipeline, or privacy cleaning step. An AI-generated image can contain software metadata, a C2PA credential, application-specific parameters, no metadata at all, or even metadata added later.
That means “metadata present” and “metadata absent” are observations, not verdicts about authenticity. Use the C2PA checker when provenance credentials are present, and use appropriate forensic methods when origin verification matters.
FAQ
Can the viewer show exact GPS coordinates?
If valid GPS coordinates are embedded and the user chooses to reveal them, the interface can display them and optionally map the location. Handle location carefully because it can be sensitive.
Why do two metadata viewers show different results?
Tools may support different formats, namespaces, MakerNotes, or proprietary tags. Some normalize field names while others display raw structures. That is why the product should state which metadata families it supports.
Can metadata be wrong?
Yes. Metadata can be edited, copied, removed, generated by software, or left stale after an image changes. It is useful evidence about a file, but not automatically a trustworthy record of reality.
